ALDI SÜD announces living wage commitments in the banana supply chain
ALDI SÜD has committed to implement living wages for at least 50% of bananas sold in Germany by 2025. We are supporting living wages in bananas through the German Retailer “Working Group on Living Income and Living Wages”.
In a kick-off event on 9 December 2021, ALDI SÜD and other members of the German Retailer Working Group, presented time-bound milestones towards living wages in the banana supply chain.
By 2023, at least 7% of our banana volumes for the German market should be sourced as “Living Wage Banana”. This first commitment focuses on Ecuador as a pilot country. Engaging local stakeholders in Ecuador, such as workers, and close coordination with standard-setting organisations will be key to the success of this project. Once successfully launched, we will then increase the volume of Living Wage Banana” annually and expand beyond Ecuador into other banana producing countries. We are committed to achieving at least a 50% share of Living Wage Bananas by 2025 and to fully implement Living Wages Bananas for the German market in the long term.
As part of this process, we will improve our procurement practices, incorporate living wage criteria, and support workers’ representatives in negotiating a living wage.
