Our Performance
In addition to our goals for Resource Efficiency highlighted below, some of our national organisations have additional requirements. You can find out more on the ALDI SOUTH Group national websites.
Chemicals in production
Our Goal: Since 2015, we have been working to phase out or replace hazardous chemicals used in the manufacturing processes for both textiles and shoes with safer alternatives.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Wet production facilities used | 719 | 637 | 578 |
Wet production facilities used with valid wastewater and sludge analysis | 97% | 98% | 98% |
Wet production facilities used with compliant wastewater and sludge analysis | - | 88% | 97% |
Wastewater and sludge analysis provided since the publication of the ALDI Detox Commitment in March 2015 | 4,701 | 5,299 |
Cocoa
Our Goal: All cocoa used in relevant own-brand products is from certified sources.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Products containing certified cocoa | 88% | 89% | 99% |
We require the cocoa used for our own-brand products to be certified according to one of the following standards:
- Fairtrade/Fairtrade Sourced Ingredients
- Fairtrade USA
- Rainforest Alliance
- Organic (only in combination with one of the above standards)
The indicator is based on all chocolates, biscuits (except in the US), and seasonal confectionary as well as products from other supply chains which contain a relevant minimum amount of cocoa, such as baking chocolate and drinking chocolate.
Coffee
Our Goal: The percentage of sustainable coffee products is to be steadily increased.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Certified coffee products | - | - | 75% |
We require coffee to be certified according to one of the following standards:
- Fairtrade
- Fairtrade USA
- Rainforest Alliance
- Organic
Due to supply chain disruptions, we are currently unable to source enough certified coffee for selected private label coffee products with the Rainforest Alliance seal. This means that from January 2023 these products contain only 70-90% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee ingredients. As soon as this supply shortage is resolved, we expect to return to the minimum 90% certified content when sourcing Rainforest Alliance certified products. You can find more information here.
Cotton
Our Goal: We will use 100% sustainable cotton for our own-brand garments and household textiles by 2025.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Sustainable cotton tonnage | 25% | 50% | 63% |
We require the cotton used for our own-brand products to be of either recycled origin or certified according to one of the following internationally recognised sustainability standards:
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) / GOTS ‘organic - in conversion’
- Organic Content Standard (OCS) 100/blended
- Cotton made in Africa (CmiA)
- Better Cotton
- Fairtrade
Eggs
Our Goal: We are committed to sourcing 100% of our shell eggs from cage-free supply chains by 2025.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Cage-free shell eggs | 46% | 44% | 48% |
Fairtrade
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Fairtrade certified products (including Faitrade-sourced ingredients) | 686 | 401 | 389 |
Fish and seafood
Our Goal: We will eliminate overfishing, bycatch and ecosystem damage in our fish and seafood supply chains by 2030.
The goal will be achieved by engaging with our suppliers and taking the following steps:
- Products will be either discontinued or moved to responsible sources. For this purpose, improvement plans with relevant suppliers have already been set up.
- Three long term improvement plans have been put in place to achieve MSC certification for relevant herring, mackerel and zander products.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Responsibly sourced fish and seafood | 89% | 95% | 99% |
Our criteria for the responsible sourcing of fish:
- Certification in accordance with one of our recognised standards (Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Organic, GlobalG.A.P., Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and further by Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) recognised standards), or
- World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) or Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) rating shows a low or medium risk, or
- The raw material originates from a fishery participating in an Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) or Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP).
Additional criteria for tuna: the processor/trader is a member of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) or the fishing vessel is registered within the ProActive Vessel Register (PVR).
Palm (kernel) oil
Our Goal: All palm (kernel) oil and palm (kernel) oil-based derivatives and fractions used in our own-brand products are certified.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Certified palm (kernel) oil in our own-brand products | 100% | 100% | 100% |
The indicator is based on the total amount of palm oil used in all of our food and non-food products and derived from the physical supply chain options ‘Identity Preserved’ (IP), ‘Segregated’ (SG), or ‘Mass Balance’ (MB) as defined by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). In case the necessary derivative or fraction for non-food products are not yet available as physical, respective volumes may be covered by RSPO Credits as an interim solution until their physical supply is secured, latest until the end of 2025.
Packaging
Our Goals:
- By 2025, 100% of our own-brand packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
- By 2025, we will reduce our own-brand packaging material in relation to sales by 15% (baseline 2020).
- By 2025, we will have 30% recycled content in our own-brand plastic packaging.
- By 2025, we will reduce the amount of virgin plastic in our own-brand packaging in relation to sales by 40% (baseline 2020).
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|
Reusable, recyclable, or compostable own-brand packaging | - | 60% | 66% |
Reduction of our own-brand packaging material in relation to sales (group-wide weighted average; baseline: 2020) | - | - | -2,5% |
Recycled content in our own-brand plastic packaging | - | - | 18% |
Soy
We regularly calculate our soy footprint with the aim of minimising deforestation risks and negative impacts in our supply chains. In 2020, we calculated the soy footprint for the entire ALDI SOUTH Group. The results show that most of the soy in our supply chains is associated with a low risk of deforestation.
ALDI SOUTH Group | 2020 |
---|---|
Total soy tonnage | 1,360,000 |
Soy with low risk of deforestation | 59% |
ALDI SOUTH Group - Soy Footprint | 2020 |
---|---|
Low deforestation risk | 59% |
High deforestation risk | 41% |
Soy Footprint - Europe:
Since 2018, we have participated in the Collective Soy Reporting (CSR) to quantify and map the use of soymeal in the supply chains of the European ALDI organisations. The CSR is a supplier survey conducted by an external service provider who reviews the claims of our suppliers.
Soy supply chains are very complex as by far the largest share is used as animal feed and is thus further down the supply chain from our direct suppliers, for example for meat, dairy, and eggs. Due to this complexity, it takes longer for suppliers to establish and implement reliable monitoring systems along the supply chain, which can lead to fluctuations in the data between years. The CSR approach helps us to increase transparency each year within our own supply chain and across the European marketplace.
