Improving working conditions and livelihoods of cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire

The ALDI SOUTH Group and Fairtrade collaborate on a project in Côte d’Ivoire, which will improve working conditions and livelihoods for local cocoa farmers.

The project will analyse the impact of ALDI’s business operations on the community and environment, increase traceability, establish transparency of our cocoa supply chains, and provide a basis for further projects together with Fairtrade. During the first phase of the project in 2020, ALDI and Fairtrade will co-develop a monitoring report that evaluates the farmers’ progress and their working practices to identify where the most support is needed. The evaluation will look at the yields and quality of cropping, the application of Good Agricultural Practices, child labour prevention, elimination of deforestation and the use of the Fairtrade premium.

As part of the project, ALDI’s business partner will source 100% traceable cocoa beans from the selected cooperative. These will then be used as a percentage of the cocoa in the Fairtrade-certified chocolate bars of the ALDI exclusive brand ‘Moser Roth’.
