Creating “Better Lives through Better Business”: ALDI’s Detox Actions are part of The Consumer Goods Forum’s global campaign

The ALDI SOUTH Group is excited to be one of 23 organisations to be featured in the “Better Lives through Better Business” campaign presented by The Consumer Goods Forum. The film shows the success of our work in reducing the negative impacts of chemical-based production processes used in the textile and footwear industry. Since 2015, our actions in this matter have positively affected workers, local communities and the environment.

What is the “Better Lives through Better Business” campaign?

The world is facing challenges today that will define future generations: repairing some of the damage already done while asking more of already stretched ecosystems seems an impossible task. “Better Lives through Better Business” is an exciting new online video series, presented by The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, exploring the brands and organisations around the world changing our approach to more sustainable food systems, caring for people and protecting our planet.

We are excited about the launch of this series produced by BBC StoryWorks. We intentionally wanted to showcase actions that go beyond our membership because we are keen to show everyone what innovative solutions are taking place to drive positive change globally. As the CGF, we know our members are leading on many of these innovations, but there is more that we can do to ensure more sustainable food systems and to create an industry that has a positive impact on people and planet. We hope this series can help inspire everyone to step up to the challenge before it’s too late”.

Our Story

In 2015, the ALDI SOUTH Group, together with 80 other international fashion retailers, committed to the goals of Greenpeace’s Detox Initiative. Through a process of substitution and elimination, we have significantly reduced the use of hazardous chemicals in our textile and footwear production.

By working with teams from across the whole group, we set ambitious standards and introduced comprehensive chemical management across all tiers in the supply chain. This has led to improved wastewater and sludge testing results, and an increased treatment of factory wastewater. A highly efficient overview of our supply chain also enables us to support strategic production facilities to meet our requirements.

We will continue to increase the scope of our work to address further environmental impacts, ranging from strengthening our commitment to more sustainable material sourcing to raising awareness of opportunities to buy more sustainably. This means that we will promote more sustainable production processes and sustainable products to enable our customers to consume sustainably.

Our film tells the story about how ALDI is positively changing the textile and footwear industry in Bangladesh and it highlights that better business really does lead to better lives.”
