ALDI continues to improve its performance against the already achieved 2020 GHG reduction target

We are aware of the significant impact we have on the climate and the environment - not only because of the products we sell, but also due to our operations. Our 2019 ‘Climate Protection Progress Report’ shows that every national market of the ALDI SOUTH Group has achieved the goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% per m2 of sales area by the end of 2020.

Company Carbon Footprint

In accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, we have been monitoring our progress by calculating our Company Carbon Footprint for all of our business processes and locations since 2012.

The individual country’s GHG emission reductions range from -38% to -73% and we are proud to continue with a good performance after already having achieved our target in 2018, two years ahead of time.

GHG emission reduction per country

In 2019, the ALDI SOUTH Group already had a 90% group-wide use of green electricity. With Australia committing to 100% renewable electricity from 2021, the share of green electricity used will continue to increase.

New Climate Strategy

In July 2020, the ALDI SOUTH Group became one of the first international food retailers with a company-wide approved ‘Science Based Target‘ (SBT) for climate protection.

By the end of 2025, we aim to reduce our overall operational emissions by more than a quarter (against baseline year 2016). The ALDI SOUTH Group is also committed to encouraging our strategic suppliers, who are responsible for 75% of product related emissions, to work towards setting science-based emissions targets by the end of 2024.

With these measures, we are working towards our vision of ‘zero carbon‘.
