ALDI SOUTH launches campaign against packaging waste

For many years now, we as a company have been channelling our efforts into reducing, reusing, and recycling packaging. In preparation for the next step, ALDI SOUTH Germany has approved a packaging strategy with specific objectives and measures.

With ‘The ALDI Packaging Mission: Avoid. Reuse. Recycle.’ project, ALDI SOUTH Germany now aims to take a more holistic and strategic approach to the topic of packaging. We have set ourselves the following ambitious goals regarding the packaging of our private label products:

  • Achieve a 30% reduction of packaging by 2025
  • Use 100% recyclable packaging for all products by 2022
  • Reduce the quantity of packaging used for fresh produce to the greatest possible extent
  • Continuously extend our range of unpacked fresh produce

Over the past few years, we have already achieved tremendous success in reducing packaging materials. In the last five years, we have been able to reduce the total quantity of sales packaging of our private label products by more than 10%. ALDI SOUTH Germany has been using reusable crates to transport fresh produce since 2010. As a result, we have managed to save more than 30,000 tonnes of cardboard boxes that would otherwise have been destroyed after use. Thus, we avoided more than 24,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

As part of our commitment to using recyclable packaging for all of our private labels by 2022, we strive to promote the important development of circular economy in Germany. Thus, we support the plans recently published by the EU Commission within the scope of its strategy for plastics.
