ALDI SOUTH Germany reports continuing progress with the ‘German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles’

Today, ALDI SOUTH Germany published a Progress Report and a Roadmap concerning their commitment towards a sustainable textile supply chain. Activities in 2019 include improving living wages, advancing the rights of children and young worker’s as well as improving chemical management in production facilities.

ALDI SOUTH Germany became a member of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles (German: Bündnis für nachhaltige Textilien) in 2015. This multi-stakeholder partnership is committed to improving social and environmental conditions in the global textile production.

Another year of great progress

Various measures supported the advancement of a sustainable textile supply chain in 2018; including the achievement of increasing the share of sustainable cotton to 30%. A project on the availability of non-genetically modified cotton seed in cooperation with Fairtrade and the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) showed success in Central Asia. Also the ALDI Factory Advancement Project (AFAP) PLUS in Bangladesh delivered training measures that improve factory-based childcare facilities.

Excerpt of the 2019 roadmap

  • As a member of the partnership initiative on living wages, ALDI will analyse its purchasing practices and develop an improvement plan.
  • In order to better protect children’s and young worker’s rights in the supply chain, ALDI intends to further expand its strategic cooperation with CCR CSR – an organisation specializing in child rights.
  • ALDI will conduct training in production facilities using wet processes to substitute hazardous chemicals with environmentally friendly alternatives.
