Joining forces: ALDI engages in Retailer Cocoa Collaboration to tackle issues such as deforestation in the cocoa sector

In September 2019, the ALDI SOUTH Group joined the newly-formed Retailer Cocoa Collaboration (RCC) committing to support the Cocoa and Forests Initiative. This initiative will drive change by protecting and restoring forests in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Colombia. The RCC will also map collective cocoa supply chains to gain a greater understanding of the social and environmental risks found in production countries.

ALDI joined other retailers in contacting major traders in the cocoa sector requesting information on their sustainability performance and supply chain activities that address environmental and social issues. Issues included are e.g. forced and child labour, incomes and deforestation. The resulting trader evaluation in 2020 will provide valuable information and transparency about parts of the cocoa supply chains from which a retailer normally can be several steps away.

ALDI is committed to fostering fair working conditions and environmentally friendly production and acknowledges that retailers play a significant role in cocoa supply chains. We are committed to generate impact on the ground and believe that the greatest impact in the cocoa sector can be achieved through collaboration and look forward to supporting the RCC achieve its aims.
