For better tuna: ALDI partners with the Global Tuna Alliance

On World Tuna day, the ALDI SOUTH and ALDI Nord Groups have become partners of the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA). This partnership will support the sustainable development of our supply chains and ensures that the tuna ultimately meets the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility.

ALDI has set itself the global goal of continuously increasing the number of responsibly sourced fish and seafood products in its stores and ensuring that the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility are met along our tuna supply chain.

“Tuna stocks around the world are under increasing strain from poor management. We are committed to the principles of responsibility and sustainability in the sourcing of our own label fish. We have set ourselves the goal of increasing the share of responsibly sourced products in our fish and seafood range. Working with the GTA will help us reach this goal.”

Sarah Bollermann, Director of Corporate Responsibility International, ALDI SOUTH Group

“Sustainability in the fish supply chain - and here in particular with regards to tuna - is a key concern for us as part of our sustainability strategy. We can only achieve our goal of sustainable sourcing - both in environmental and social terms - with strong partners. Therefore, we are looking forward to the cooperation with GTA.”

Erik Hollmann, Director Corporate Responsibility/Quality Assurance International, ALDI Nord Group

The Global Tuna Alliance is an independent group of retailers and tuna supply chain companies, who are committed to

  • realising harvest strategies for tuna fisheries,
  • avoiding Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated product,
  • improving traceability as well as environmental sustainability
  • progressing work on human rights in tuna fisheries,
  • implementing the objectives laid out in World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Tuna 2020 Traceability Declaration.

The GTA works collaboratively with member and non-member organisations to find industry-wide solutions to implement GTA commitments and the WEF 2020 Traceability Declaration commitments on topics such as Tuna Traceability, Socially responsible Tuna Supply Chains, Environmentally Responsible Tuna Sources, and Government Partnership.

We are delighted to welcome the ALDI SOUTH Group to the Partnership. ALDI has exciting plans for tuna sustainability and we can support each other to see these realised”.
