ALDI SOUTH ranked as best discount retailer to be making most progress towards sustainable palm oil

The WWF Palm Scorecard for 2019 found that only 15 out of 173 global brands were leading the way to source sustainable palm oil. The ALDI SOUTH Group has been ranked 5th with 18.3 out of 22 points and represents the only discounter in the top 5 retailers list.

The 2019 WWF Palm Scorecard is released periodically and assesses the sustainability of palm oil in companies’ supply chains and how committed they are in promoting sustainability within the palm oil sector.

2019 WWF Palm Scorecard Retailers

As a responsible retailer, we know that only with sustainable palm oil production, we can deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and prevent deforestation and climate change, which is why since the end of 2018, we use 100% physically certified sustainable palm oil in our private label products. By using certified palm oil, we can ensure that ALDI products do protect forests, workers’ health and wildlife.

We are aware that much more has to be done in order to guarantee the sustainable sourcing of palm oil: This is why we complement our group-wide commitment to physical supply chains by our smallholder approach developed in 2016 and engage actively in multi-stakeholder initiatives such as the Palm Oil Transparency Coalition (POTC) and the RSPO’s Smallholder Standing Committee. Additionally we support a smallholder project in Côte d’Ivoire in order to pave the way for a sustainable cultivation of palm oil.
