Nine letters for a fairer world: Fairtrade products change lives for the better

For 30 years, Fairtrade has been improving living and working conditions for small farmers and workers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The ALDI SOUTH Group shares the same core values and offers a wide variety of Fairtrade products in our stores. These four national stories emphasise the importance of our commitment to responsible sourcing.

Our customers are increasingly interested in purchasing products certified by Fairtrade and we enable them to purchase them at an affordable price. In 2018 the ALDI SOUTH Group sold over 330 different Fairtrade certified products (including Fairtrade-sourced ingredients).

UK: Fairtrade project to empower women in Ethiopia

More than 75% of ALDI UK’s Fairtrade flowers are sourced from Ethiopia, where more than three-quarters of people working in the flower-growing industry are women. ALDI UK announced its support for a new Fairtrade project that both empowers and protects women as well as gives them the tools and support they need in order to take on leadership roles on farms in their communities.

Germany: Fairly traded - the ONE WORLD Orange Juice

ALDI SOUTH Germany offers Fairtrade products under the own brand ONE WORLD, which is based on the criteria of the Fairtrade label. Since 2018, ALDI have become the first retailer in Germany to start selling segregated Fairtrade orange juice. ALDI ensures that it contains only Fairtrade certified fruit and the juice can be traced back seamlessly from the store to each individual cooperative.

Austria: Fairtrade Roses Challenge

In March 2019, HOFER Austria and its customers took part in the Fairtrade Austria’s Rose Challenge. This initiative emphasised that everyone who bought Fairtrade bouquets helped to achieve the goal of more fairness in the countries of origin. Additionally, HOFER is supporting a climate protection project in Kenya in order to become the first food retailer in Austria that is offering CO2-neutral Fairtrade roses.

Australia: Fairtrade Fortnight in August

ALDI Australia proudly supported the Australian initiative of ‘Fairtrade fortnight’ that reminds shoppers that purchasing Fairtrade certified products benefits and protects the rights of farmers and workers in developing countries. Did you know that ALDI is the largest retailer of own brand Fairtrade coffee and chocolate in Australia? And the best of it all: shoppers don’t have to spend a small fortune to improve the lives of workers around the world.
